Fancy some meatballs?
This movie was inspired by a book with the same title “ Cloudy with a chance of meatballs” by Judi Barrett and Ron Barrett. However, it does not closely follow what is written in the book. This is a brief synopsis of the movie.
Aspiring inventor Flint Lockwood is the socially awkward genius behind some of the most bizarre contraptions ever conceived. But even though all of his inventions, from spray-on shoes to a monkey thought translator, have been spectacular failures that caused trouble in his small town, Flint is determined to create something that will make people happy.
When Flint's latest machine, designed to turn water into food, accidentally destroys the town square and rockets up into the clouds, he thinks his inventing career is over. Until something amazing happens—cheeseburgers start raining from the sky. His machine actually works! The food weather is an instant success, and Flint forges a fast friendship with Sam Sparks, the weathergirl who comes to town to cover what she calls "the greatest weather phenomenon in history."
But when people greedily ask for more and more food, the machine starts behaving erratically, unleashing spaghetti tornadoes and giant meatballs. With the town about to be buried beneath mountains of marshmallows and waves of watermelons, it's up to Flint and Sam to use their combined expertise to shut down the machine and put everything right.

The media in the movie represents the views of the government of the town as they have the political power. As the media monopolizes opinions, they drive the town to believe that this project benefits them. No matter what the villagers felt about it, they have no channel to voice their oppositions because powerless groups like them are silenced.
When the news decided to broadcast about a tiny island where food rains from the sky, as well as live coverage by Sam Spurts then broadcast in different languages across the world; it has achieved its goal of setting the agenda for the audiences as they spanned across the world. Through the repeated broadcasting of the news (the different food that rains everyday at different time: breakfast, lunch and dinner), it raised an important issue in the public’s mind – how is that possible? That in turn managed to attract many visitors to the small town and enjoy a meal at the open-air café to see if it is true.
The media can have a great influence on us like in the case of this movie. They can manipulate us and sets agenda to make us believe in what they want us to believe and think. It also represents the perspective of the powerful elite - the economic and political powers of a particular society. Do you have any views on the positive or negative impacts that the media can inflict upon us? You can leave your comments or raise any issue about what I have mentioned in the above entry!

Indeed, the media is a powerful tool to disseminate information. However, with powers come with its pitfalls. Information may not be accurate and reliable. One has to be discerning against the type of information obtained from the media. An example would be advertisement. Companies use media to portray a positive image on their products. However, the products may not be as effective as what the advertisements guaranteed. Nevertheless, some forms of media has high reliability such as the newspapers, which aims to provide factual and balanced perspectives to the public. The media has a great influence on us and can be manipulative. Therefore, it is important to differentiate the type of information obtained and get the best out of the media.

Hi! :) The media is powerful in the sense that most of us usually discuss on anything that the media shows. For example current news, fashion. etc.

I think the media is a good medium to transmit message to the public. It is true that media messages are temporal and those who did not catch the message might not be able to view it at a later time.

I fully agree with the point that the media can manipulate us and set agenda to make us believe in what they want us to believe and think. In the context of the movie, the influence of the media changed the fortyunes of a small island. However in real life, the influence of the media can have negative repercussions. For example the effects of war on people in war-torn third world countries are ignored, while the suffering people from first world countries experience during terror attacks is widely covered and emphasized.

Even though most people's opinion of media is one sided - meaning they think media has a generally negative influence on the public, it might not be as negative as it seems to us.
Part of this is due to the function of media. Media's function at the base level is to inform and provide knowledge. And even though modern society has disfigured that concept, the general public are still largely influenced by the media, because they understand media's existence allows them to be more informed about issues.
Hence, the people from all over the world swamped to Swallow Falls to see this extraordinary phenomenon, because they believed in the media's ability to inform and educate them about the happenings in other parts of the world. And not all the time are people manipulated into doing things through the influence of media. If we believe that media can play a part in everything we do, wouldnt that be insulting the intelligence of humans?

I agree that the media is able to manipulate the audience and induce us to think in the direction they are stirring us towards. In the movie, the mayor knew fully well the impact media could give to the town, and primarily, HIS CAREER, and wanted to make use of the influence media has to project his ideas. This shows us the dangers media can have if the propagators of media are not partial and have self interest.

One way the power of the media is shown is how people clamour to be part of the media crew, how they like being on television.
In the movie, Sam Spurts was so excited to be a weather broadcaster, even if it means working in a small island in Swallow Falls far away from the main land.
Brent was also upset that Flints Lockwood stole his limelight to be the one who cuts the ribbon instead of him, because he might have relished the feeling of being on television.
Even Flint Lockwood, being a child outcasted for most part of his life, behaved out of his character when he finally got the chance to show his invention to the media.
This shows us how powerful media is in drawing people's attention, either to or from a person.

There was this scene in the movie where Sam Spurts tied up her hair and wore glasses, and the main news broadcaster refused to give her screentime. This actually reflects that the media always wants to present the best to its viewers. In actual fact, broadcasters have a set of rules to comply and how they carry themselves in the national television is very important. I believe this is some kind of "propaganda" or agenda setting that they hope to achieve, where public figures have to be upright so that they can set good examples for the younger population of the audience to learn, since it's evidently proven that many people learn better through visual and hearing.

hmm.. "They can manipulate us and sets agenda to make us believe in what they want us to believe and think." i think that's not a definite statement, it's true to certain kinda media such as advertisements, drama serials but not totally in terms of news? i believe we still have the right to think and the choice to make our stand.

Even news might be manipulated by the government for political and propaganda reasons, so how does it make news anymore reliable then people believe it is?

The media can actually be a tool for the government of a country to spread propaganda so that their citizens can believe what the government wants them to see and think. This is also known as agenda setting. This is something that can be done by the owners of the media as well as the political powers of the country that is, the government.

Media plays a part in influencing thought processes and the way we as individuals view our lives and its occuring events. We may even be influenced to believe that fairy-tale like events do occur in real life. Perhaps, there will be an inventor like Flint to make foods drop from the sky in the years to come? But one thing for sure is that, there will be times when the audience know what's right/wrong, true/false when watching the various medias, and this is the main purpose that the media wishes to achieve - audience getting the real underlying meaning out of it.

I do not deny that media brings about both negative and postive impacts to the audience, but whether or not it is a postive or negative impact is still mainly dependent on personal mental resilience.

I agree with what anonymous has mentioned above. If you are trained to be strong enough to resist temptations from those not-so-good-scenes shown by the media, or is self-dispciplined to know how to differentiate between right or wrong, then i supposed, media will generally bring about positive impacts. Just an example (:

Media is a good communication tool that allows people to interact with the world better. It is no doubt that media can bring both negative and positive impacts. (NEGATIVE) Violence - kids may be easily influenced with what they see and they may think it's okay to be violent. (POSITIVE) Educational value - it's a platform for kids to learn and be creative. Series like Sesame Street help kids to learn in a different way. Whatever it is, it's our choice to decide what's best for us and for our family.

It is true that there are advantages as well as disadvantages of the media. However, I personally feel that the advantages outweighs the disadvantages as the media is a convenient tool of communication. It allows us to be constantly aware of what is happening around us in the world. Although it can influence the way we interpret things and even sets agenda, it is actually up to one to choose what to consume and what not to.

Media is so powerful that we, as audience, are able to comprehend what they are trying to imply. It is just like when we are watching "Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs", we know that this is just a fairy-tale storyline and this will not happen in real life. We will not subconsciously allow ourselves to be influenced by the movie. Instead, we find out what is the underlying meaning of the movie/show. I guess this is what the media wants to achieve in the end.
